Cryptocurrency just got a whole lot more legitimate.
Among more than 850 new words and definitions added to the Merriam-Webster dictionary this month, some crypto-related words are now making their initial debut.
The online version of the dictionary will now be featuring “blockchain“, defined as “a digital database containing information (i.e records of financial transactions) that may be simultaneously used and shared within a large decentralized and publicly accessible network.”
“In order for a word to be added to the dictionary it needs to have widespread and meaningful use,” stated Emily Brewster, the editor at Merriam-Webster in a recent press release.
“The new words have been added to the dictionary because they have become established members of the English language and are terms people are likely to encounter.”
Unicorn, microfinance, and microcredit are also among these new additions to the dictionary.
